Nuestra Señora de Atocha Shipwreck - Wrought-Iron Spike

Recovered from the Atocha Wreck Site on 07/12/2009 by Recovery Vessel The Dare.

This is an original Atocha Iron Spike, which falls under the classification of a "Fastener," or a portion of the hardware used for the construction of the ship. Fasteners in the form of tacks and spikes on Atocha were hand-forged using wrought iron, and display a squared shank with flat, domed, or "rose" head.

Thousands of these fasteners in various lengths (respective of their use) would be found on the wreck site of a 17th century wooden hulled ship.
