The Ruby is a highly durable red variety of the mineral corundum, scoring 9 on the Mohs scale, making it second only to diamond in hardness. Known as a "King of Gems" and July's birthstone, it is prized for colors ranging from vivid pinkish-red to deep purplish-red, with rare "pigeon's blood" red being the most valuable.
