History: After Cuba was freed from Spanish control in as a result of the Spanish American War in 1898. At the time Cuba did not have a national mint to strike its new coinage. So, for two years - in 1915 and 1916 - the Philadelphia mint struck Gold Peso for Cuba using the same planchets that the Mint used to strike U.S. gold coins! |Each 1916 Cuban 10 Peso was struck in 90% pure gold. Only 1,168,510 pieces made.
The obverse features a portrait of the native Cuban hero Jose Marti and the words "PATRIA Y LIBERTAD" which translates to Patriarch & Freedom.
The reverse displays the Cuban Coat of Arms which consists of a shield supported by an oak branch on one side and a laurel wreath on the other side.
